VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers – Basic Literacy and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)

Literacy Connections (LC) actively recruits volunteers year-round. All incoming volunteers attend an Orientation as part of the tutor training. Orientations review the history and mission of LC, discuss the issue of illiteracy, and teach understanding and sensitivity when working with adults who are illiterate. Volunteers are encouraged to become tutors but are offered other volunteer opportunities as well.

Check out our Events Calendar to find out when the next orientation is scheduled near you.

Tutor Training Workshops – Basic Literacy & ESOL

Becoming a volunteer tutor is easier than ever! Volunteers can now complete the 12-hour Tutor Training Workshop online in the comfort of their homes after an orientation. Learn to tutor Basic Reading and English as a New Language and transform the life of a student forever.

Literacy Connections provides you with all the training necessary before any tutoring activity begins. At the completion of your training you will be matched with an adult student who has expressed a desire to learn English or to learn to read and write better. Students’ needs and base skills vary greatly, but they all need your help to reach a personal goal. Just a couple of hours a week will help them do that, and will provide you with a great deal of satisfaction as well. We will support you along the way with materials and coordination.

If you think being a tutor for Literacy Connections is something you would like to do, read our Frequently Asked Questions regarding tutoring and apply to become a volunteer.
